Tips on selecting a great Web Address

Alright, so you’ve picked your new business name, a corresponding logo has been freshly squeezed from the head of your designer and they’ve begun working on your branding collateral. So what’s next?

No doubt you’ve already considered having a website built; however long before your web developer starts coding a web address needs to be selected. Your address is not only a link to your online presence, but it’s also seen as your brand and your business.

So what exactly goes into a great domain name? Below are a few tips on picking the right one.

Short and Sweet.

We’ve all seen them – enormous URL names that take up half the screen and make your hands tired from just typing them into your browser. Just because Benjamin opens an amazing fish and chip shop doesn’t mean the address needs to be www.benjaminsamazingfishandchipshop.com, this can easily be shortened to www.bensfish.com. Plus your designer won’t have a haemorrhage trying to fit a 30-odd character email address on to those upcoming business cards.

It needs to be simple.

The easiest way for potential clients to remember your domain name is to keep it clear. Inserting hyphens or using numbers instead of letters can often add fog when racking your brain for that address you saw on a passing vehicle. The name would also preferably exclude acronyms or abbreviations, eg. assoc, ave, intl, as they make the URL keywords less relevant.

My ideal domain name is already taken, it’s all over!

Now, calm down, it’s not the end of the world. As of 2015 there are 284,000,000 registered domain names worldwide so it’s no surprise that your selected domain name has already been snapped up. All is not lost. Consider tweaking the name by rearranging the words or adding in short link words. For example www.bensfish.com could be changed to www.fishbyben.com.

Picking the right domain name system.

You’ve probably seen a plethora of different naming systems such as .com, .net, .org and .biz; but which one is the best? The answer is they’re all the same, none get preference over the other. Having said that, there are advantages for Australian companies using the .com.au naming system as they are better targeted toward the Australian market.
